Our sourcing standard

Protein starts with the source.

ATHAN is building a premium sports nutrition brand around a simple principle: ingredient quality should be proven before it is marketed.

Before any protein reaches an ATHAN pouch, we evaluate where it comes from, how it is produced, what documentation supports it, and whether the formulation stays true to our minimal-ingredient standard.

We qualify the ingredient before the claim.

We are currently evaluating premium whey protein isolate suppliers in New Zealand and Australia, including both conventional and native WPI platforms.

Our focus is not on chasing the loudest claim. It is on understanding the actual ingredient — its origin, composition, processing, documentation, consistency, and suitability for a premium unflavoured protein product.

What we ask suppliers to prove.

Origin documentation

We want clear evidence of where the dairy ingredient is produced and sourced.

Specification sheets

Protein content, moisture, fat, lactose, microbiological limits, solubility, and other key technical characteristics must be documented.

Certificates of Analysis

We expect lot-level COAs or equivalent batch documentation wherever available.

Grass-fed or pasture claims

We do not intend to rely on vague marketing language. Any grass-fed or pasture-fed positioning must be supported by supplier documentation.

Microbiological quality

Supplier testing standards and microbiological specifications form part of our qualification process.

Traceability

We want the ability to understand the ingredient from source through batch, not simply accept a finished powder with no supporting trail.

Conventional WPI. Native WPI. Same standard of proof.

We are evaluating both high-quality conventional whey protein isolate and native whey protein isolate.

Native WPI is produced directly from milk using filtration, while conventional WPI is typically produced from whey generated during cheesemaking.

Neither process automatically makes a product “better.” What matters to ATHAN is the total picture: ingredient quality, amino acid profile, taste, solubility, documentation, sourcing integrity, consistency, and economics.

Minimal by design.

Our first product concept is intentionally simple:

Unflavoured whey protein isolate. Minimal ingredients. No unnecessary fillers.

Where instantization is required, a small amount of sunflower lecithin may be used.

Final nutritional values, ingredient wording, sourcing statements, and product claims will only be published once supplier specifications and supporting documentation are finalized.

Built for traceability.

Our goal is to create a product where the batch matters.

That means maintaining access to supplier documentation, product specifications, certificates of analysis, and relevant sourcing records wherever practical.

Because premium should mean more than premium packaging.
